Global occurrence: Eurasia – Europe | Americas – North America (incl Mexico) | Arctic.  Substrate: soil, clay, humus, turf, detritus, dead leaves | bryophytes – mosses, liverworts | wood – dead, living | bark, cork, plant surface – trunks, branches, twigs.  Life habit: lichenized (mutualistic with algal photobionts).  Thallus: foliose (foliaceous), leaf-like; continuous, diffuse, effuse; [th] upper surface: brown(ish) (if pale: fawn, tan; if mid: cinnamon) | blue(ish) grey | grey(ish) blue; [th upper surface]: epruinose; [th marginal and upper surface] specific structures: present; [th margin] cilia, cilioid structures: absent; [th upper surface] isidia, isidioid structures: present; [th upper surface] soredia, soralia, soralioid structures: absent; [th] morphol substructures (eg areoles, squamules): distantly discontiguous; [th] morphol substructures (eg areoles, lobes, branches) upper surface: smooth, plane | bullate; [th] morphol substructures (eg lobes, branches): irregular; [th] lower surface: yellow(ish) white (ivory, off-white, cream-coloured); [th lower surface] specific structures: present; [th lower surface] rhizines, rhizoid structures: present; [th lower surface] rhizines, rhizinoid structures: unbranched, simple | branched – unspecified.  Ascomata: absent | present; ascoma: apothecial, apothecioid – hymenial; [ascm, if apoth] margin surface; [if perith] periostiolar area, ostiole, involucrellum: brown(ish) (if pale: fawn, tan; if mid: cinnamon) | blue(ish) grey | grey(ish) blue; [ascm] paraphyses/-oids: present; [ascm] epihymenium, epithecium: brown(ish) (if pale: fawn, tan; if mid: cinnamon) | red(dish) brown (pale: orange brown).  Asci: lecanoralean; [asc] tholus: thickened; [asc] tholus amyloidity (iodine reaction): present; [asc] tholus amyloidity pattern: with amyloid tube, ring (= Collema-, Micarea-, Porpidia-, Psora-types etc).  Ascospores: (median) 8.0; [asp] shape: elongate-fusiform, ellipsoidal-fusiform | acicular (needle-shaped); [asp] septa: present, transversely septate; [asp] pigmentation: hyaline, colourless | pale brown; [asp] perispore, epispore: not apparent.  Secondary metabolites: absent.  Primary photobiont: present, cyanobacterial.  Secondary photobionts (eg in cephalodia): absent.
