Nash, T.H., Ryan, B.D., Gries, C., Bungartz, F., (eds.) 2004. Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region. Vol 2.
Thallus: squamulose, rather variable squamules: ascending to erect, deeply incised or lobate, lobes very narrow and often fingerlike, up to c. 0.6 mm long and 0.05-0.1 mm wide, sometimes forming coralloid cushions upper surface: green yellow to yellow, smooth upper cortex: pseudoparenchymatous, 10-15 µm thick lower cortex: similar to the upper cortex Apothecia: sparse, lecanorine, rounded, sessile to substipitate, up to c. 0.75 mm wide disc: darker yellow than the thallus, plane or becoming somewhat convex with age margin: thalline, soon excluded or partly remaining as a few scattered granules exciple: prominent, raised above the disc, smooth, concolorous with the disc epihymenium: yellow-brown hymenium: hyaline, 55-60 µm tall; paraphyses: simple, cylindrical or weakly swollen apically, tips up to 3 µm wide; hypothecium: hyaline asci: clavate, 8-spored ascospores: hyaline, simple to 1-septate, narrowly ellipsoid, 11-16.5 x 3.5-5 µm Pycnidia: sparse to frequent, appearing as darker yellow warts on the thallus conidia: hyaline, ellipsoid, 2-3 x 1.2-1.5 µm Spot tests: K+ reddish KC-, C- Secondary metabolites: calycin, pulvinic acid, pulvinic dilactone and vulpinic acid. Substrate and ecology: on calcium-free rocks World and Sonoran distribution: on rocks and boulders in open woodlands in Baja California Sur. Notes: Candelariella "corallizoides" is a morphologically characteristic, although variable, species with deeply incised or narrowly lobate squamules, that sometimes form coralloid cushions. In its dense form, it is quite similar to Candelariella coralliza (Nyl.) H. Magn., a species with polysporous asci, that has not been found in the Sonoran region. Often it grows together with related species, such as C. citrina, C. "complanata" and Candelina mexicana.
