Thallus: foliose, small to medium sized, moderately to loosely attached, lobate lobes: elongate and discrete to more rounded or flabellate upper surface: almost white to gray or gray-brown, without a granular or crystalline pruina upper cortex: paraplectenchymatous photobiont: primary one a chlorococcoid green alga, secondary one absent medulla: white lower cortex: prosoplectenchymatous, often somewhat poorly delimited from the medulla lower surface: white to pale tan, moderately or (more often) sparsely rhizinate; rhizines: usually concolorous with the lower surface, simple to sparsely furcate Apothecia: sessile to very short stipitate, up to 2.5 mm in diam., with thalline exciple asci: clavate, 8-spored ascospores: Physcia-type or Pachysporaria-type, brown, 1-septate, 14-27(-29) x 6-11 µm Conidiomata: pycnidial, blackened and immersed conidia: ellipsoid, 2.5-4 x 1-1.5 µm Secondary metabolites: none known Geography: primarily temperate , North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa Substrate: usually on bark or wood, less often on rock. Physciella: occurring in the Sonoran region
