Hyphal strands: absent Ascomata: superficial, elevated and sometimes with a slightly constricted base, usually aggregated, cushion-like, usually rounded, convex to flat, 50-200 µm in diam., 30-50 µm tall internal structure: wall of the outer cells: brown, hyaline in the internal ones; cells: 5-10 µm in diam. centrum: I- asci: subglobose, 22-26 x 15-20 µm, 8-spored ascospores: initially hyaline but later brown, 1-septate, occasionally 2-4-septate, slightly constricted at the septum, ellipsoid to obovate, halonate, 10-13 x 5-7 µm; wall: coarsely ornamented, with deep irregular fissures forming a rough areolate pattern. Hosts: on Diploschistes species World distribution: cosmopolitan Sonoran distribution: Arizona, Sonora, and Sinaloa. Notes: Lichenostigma maureri mainly differs from L. rugosa by its ascospores with a finely granular surface, and by occurring on fruticose epiphytic, lichen species. Lichenostigma lecanorae has larger ascomata and ascospores, and grows on Lecanora.
