Thallus dark ashy, the areolae partly scattered or contiguous, papilliform, surrounded by narrow, black, radiate hypothallus; cortex of thick-walled paraplectenchyma. Apothecia 1 mm broad, immersed but becoming raised and almost stipitate; thalloid margin exterior olive-brown, interior yellowish, I- or with a thin line 1+ blue; hypothecium cloudy; epihymenium olive-brown; hymenium 100 µm, 1+ bluish green or reddish brown; paraphyses 1.5 µm, not moniliform, but with constrictedly septate cells 4-5 x 2 µm; spores not known.
Reactions: medulla with a K+ yellow misty diffusion.

This species grows on acid rocks. It is known from Siberia, Greenland, and Akpatok Island, Northwest Territories.
