Life form. Lichenized fungus.
Description. Thallus crustose, corticate; surface smooth to uneven, olive-green to yellowish. Vegetative diaspores absent. Photobiont Trentepohlia alga. Ascomata perithecia, globose, trypethelioid: numerous perithecia clustered within pseudostromata, 1-2 mm diam., prominent, to almost sessile, brownish, usually covered by yellow pigment; ostioles apical, dark; internally yellow. Hamathecium hyaline, clear. Asci clavate, 8-spored; ascospores hyaline, fusiform, 37-52 x 8-11 μm, 9-13-septate, lumina rectangular when mature, K/I-.
Chemistry. Thallus spot tests negative; pseudostromata UV+ red, K+ purple, with yellow anthaquinone.
Substrate and habitat. Corticolous on hardwood trees.
Distribution. Pantropical; in North Carolina found in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain ecoregions.
