Description. Life form: lichenized fungus.

Thallus crustose, corticate, olive-green to yellowish brown, smooth to uneven. Vegetative diaspores absent. Photobiont trentepohlioid alga. Ascomata trypethelioid perithecia (several ascomata immersed in a pseudostroma with partly-fused outer walls but separate ostioles); pseudostromata 0.8-1.5 mm diam. (individual ascomata 0.5-0.8 mm diam.), prominent to sessile, blackish-brown, internally with yellow, dusty granular pigment; ostioles apical. Hamathecium clear; paraphysoids slender, branched, anastomosing. Asci 8-spored; ascospores 3-septate, fusiform, hyaline, 18-28 × 6-9 µm, K/I-.

Chemistry. Thallus UV-, K-; pseudostromata UV-, internally K+ yellow; anthraquinone.

Substrate and Habitat. Corticolous on hardwood trees in forests.

Distribution. Southeastern North America; in North Carolina found throughout.
