Description. Lichenized fungus.

Thallus dimorphic. Primary thallus squamulose, persistent or disappearing; squamules strap-shaped (1-3 x 0.5 mm), irregularly digitate or branched, branches short and rounded; surface gray-green to olive green, white beneath. Photobiont trebouxioid alga. Podetia short 1-5 x 0.5-2 mm, cylindrical, cup-forming; cups dilated, irregular, proliferating along edges; podetial surface corticate, cortex mostly continuous, esorediate, usually squamulate. Ascomata biatorine apothecia, brown, on cup edges podetial tips; pycnidia brown, may be present on cup edges.

Chemistry. K-, PD+ yellow; squamatic and baeomycesic acids.

Substrate and Habitat. On soil.

Distribution. Eastern North America; in North Carolina throughout, mostly in Coastal Plain and Piedmont ecoregions.
