Nash, T.H., Ryan, B.D., Gries, C., Bungartz, F., (eds.) 2004. Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region. Vol 2.
Pycnidia: immersed in the host ascomata or thallus, becoming erumpent, arising singly, dark brown, subglobose, 50-120 µm in diam., opening in an irregular way and occasionally becoming cupulate; wall: brown, 5-6 µm thick conidiophores: absent conidiogenous cells: hyaline to pale brown, lageniform to subcylindrical, with several annellations, 5.5-12 x 2-3 µm conidia: pale brown, 1septate, smooth, dry, elongate ellipsoid, with a narrowly truncate base, 4-7.5 x 2-3 µm. Hosts: Caloplaca and Lecanora species (mainly apothecia), also reported from a number of different hosts, heterogeneous?; in the Sonoran area on Caloplaca (incl. C. cerina) and Lecanora caesiorubella World distribution: Europe, South and North America, possibly cosmopolitan Sonoran distribution: Arizona, Baja California Sur, and Sonora. Notes: Lichenodiplis lecanorae is a very common lichenicolous fungus, reported from many different hosts, but especially from species of Caloplaca and Lecanora. All specimens from other hosts are likely to belong to different species. Although it is unlikely to have a species confined to Caloplaca and Lecanora, no clear differences between specimens from these two host genera could yet be demonstrated. Hafellner et al. (2002) mention a specimen on Caloplaca cerina from Arizona with much larger conidia, 8-10.5 x 4-4.5 µm, that might represent an additional, undescribed species.
