Thallus: foliose, single lobed attached by a single umbilicus and with 11-45 mm wide lobes upper surface: gray, with epinecral layer consisting of air filled hyphae upper cortex: 100-180 µm thick, hyaline with the outermost 1020 µm part brown algal layer: 50-140 µm thick medulla: 170-380 µm thick, of filamentous hyphae turning red with Melzer's iodine lower cortex: 50-110 µm thick, with the outermost 10-20 µm brown lower surface: light to dark brown, with rhizinomorphs rhizinomorphs: 50-130 µm thick, with medullary layer in the center Perithecia: broadly obpyriform to globose with hyaline exciple which is light brown to brown in the uppermost part asci: clavate or cylindrical, 8-spored ascospores: simple, hyaline, 1015 x 4-7 µm Pycnidia: not found Spot tests: all negative Secondary metabolites: none detected. Substrate and ecology: on different rock-substrates although the majority of the Sonoran specimens grew on sandstone World distribution: northern Africa, Mongolia, and North America Sonoran distribution: scattered throughout Arizona. Notes: Dermatocarpon schaechtelinii differs from Dermatocarpon moulinsii in having thicker rhizinomorphs and having a medulla within the cortex layer.
