Thallus lacking or represented only under the apothecia and then 1+ blue. Apothecia to 2 mm, adnate, flat, the margin well developed, becoming convex and immarginate; exciple exterior green-black to violet-black, K+ violet-red, interior pale, 1+ blue; hypothecium dark brown; epithecium green-black; hymenium 35-45 μm, hyaline; paraphyses simple, rarely branched and anastomosing; spores subglobose, 4-5 μm in diameter, or ellipsoid-oblong, 6-7 x 4-5 μm, often mixed.

This species is found on acid rocks. It is known from the Arctic, Scandinavia, Nepal, and Venezuela.
