Description.Life form: lichenized fungus.
Thallus crustose, corticolous, off-white to pale fawn, continuous, smooth, dull; vegetative diaspores absent. Photobiont trentepohlioid alga. Ascomata lirellae, erumpent, with a basal to partly thick lateral thalline margin, short to elongate, slender, not branched or rarely trifurcate; labia convergent, rarely slightly divergent, entire, black, not pruinose; disk usually not, or only rarely visible from above, blackish to brownish, not or very slightly whitish pruinose (lineola-morph). Exciple laterally carbonized; hymenium inspersed. Asci 8-spored; ascospores hyaline, transversely septate, 5–11-septate, 25–45 × 5–9 μm.
Chemistry. K+ yellow turning red; norstictic; subnorstictic and connorstictic acids.
Substrate and Habitat. Corticolous on hardwood trees.
Distribution. Pantropical, north into eastern North America; in North Carolina found in Coastal Plain ecoregion.
